This department is responsible for research on the foreign affairs affecting the Macao SAR, which are the responsibilities of the Central People's Government, in accordance with the principle of "one country, two systems" and the provisions of the Basic Law of the Macao SAR. 
 It shall, as instructed by the Foreign Ministry or requested by the Macao SAR government,  offer assistance in matters relating to visits of foreign leaders to the Macao SAR or overseas visits of  Chief Executive and other principal officials of the Macao SAR government.
It also releases news and information on Macao-related foreign affairs and processes applications by correspondents from foreign press units based in Macao to cover news on the  mainland  of  China.
